Annunciation to the Shepherds

Miniature on a leaf from a Book of Hours in Latin, illuminated manuscript on vellum;

single leaf, 163 by 121 mm, ruled for 16 lines of text per page in a fine gothic textura script, comprising start of the hour of Terce in the Hours of the Virgin, the miniature above a four-line foliate illuminated initial and surrounded by a full foliate border, the verso with illuminated one- and two-line initials and line-fillers and a one-sided border of gold leafy sprays

The miniature is painted in a charming provincial style probably influenced by Rouen artists such as the Master of John Fastolf, the Master of John Talbot, and the Master of Thomas Hoo. Especially unusual and appealing is the artist's rendering of the rear-views of two of the sheep.
