Description

Roelant Roghman

Amsterdam 1627 - 1692

A town wall with a tower by water

Black chalk and grey wash and touches of pen and grey ink, within pen and brown ink framing lines

139 by 177 mm

It has been suggested that this typical example of Roghman's more lyrical style represents a view on the Zuiderzee, but no more precise location has so far been identified.  Within Roghman's extensive and varied oeuvre, his drawings on this scale fall into two clear groups:  rapidly drawn studies in pen and ink, worked up with brown wash, and more peaceful, light-filled drawings such as this, executed in black chalk and grey wash.
