Description

A Select Canyon Diablo Iron Meteorite From Meteor Crater, Arizona

Iron, coarse octahedrite

Meteor Crater, Coconino County, Arizona, United States

107 x 69 x 74mm (4.25 x 2.75 x 3 in.) and 2241 grams (5 lbs.)

This meteorite originates from “Meteor Crater”, Arizona, the most famous and best-preserved meteorite crater on Earth. Like most meteorites, this lot originated in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, and approximately 45,000 years ago this specimen was part of a tremendous iron mass that plowed into the desert with the force of more than 100 atomic bombs. Most of the mass vaporized on impact while fragments were flung as far as eleven miles from ground zero. This shapely example has a graphite-hued patina with platinum highlights. One large socket penetrates the center of the mass. Meteorites originating from this celebrated event are prized by museums and private collectors throughout the world. This is a choice example of Canyon Diablo (“The Canyon of the Devil”) among the most renowned and sought-after American meteorites and whose impact crater receives more than 200,000 visitors a year.
