Beethoven's celebrated opusculum was written as a contribution to a collection of 63 settings of a text by Giuseppe Carpani by in all 46 composers. The first edition was that by Mollo (1808). Kühnel's abridged edition contains 18 settings by 15 composers. Five copies of the present attractive contemporary edition are listed in Ludwig van Beethoven.
