Description

Bach, Johann Sebastian

Manuscript of the Fantasy in C minor for keyboard, BWV 906, and the Gigue from the first Partita, BWV 825

notated in an amateur hand in dark brown ink on up to four two-stave systems per page, with ownership inscription to title ("E. Rudorff. Lichtenstein's Nachlass")

5 pages, plus blanks, oblong 4to (c. 25.8 x 33cm), unbound, old repair to spine, no place or date [presumably first half of the C19th], browning and dust-staining

This volume and others were acquired by the Berlin pianist and teacher Ernst Rudorff (1840-1916) from the Nachlass of Marie Lichtenstein (1917-1890), Rudorff's god-mother and also the god-daughter of Carl Maria von Weber. Whether this manuscript is related in any way to one in the Berlin Staatsbibliothek (P 495), listed in Schmieder, has not been determined. BWV 906 was first published in 1802/3 by Hoffmeister & Kühnel, BWV 825, already in Bach's lifetime (1726).
