Description

Handel, George Frideric

Samson An Oratorio The Words taken from Milton Set to Musick by M.r Handel [score], London: J. Walsh, [1743]

FIRST EDITION, SECOND ISSUE (Smith no.2), 91 pages, folio (32.9 x 24.2cm), engraved throughout, table of songs and advertisement, modern quarter calf, a few very small marginal stains

We have not traced a copy of this issue at auction since the sale in these rooms of the Meyer copy, 16 October 2012, lot 129. First performed at Covent Garden on 18 February 1743, Handel's Samson contains one of the most famous of all his arias, namely the brilliant 'Let the bright seraphim in burning row' for soprano.
