‘Bimal Dasgupta’s paintings have always been based on nature right from the very beginning. His roots in the riverine landscape of Bengal have contributed to his imagery. While he started painting with realistic landscapes after his 1961 tour of Europe, he took to abstraction, but always with visual clues pointing to identify the painting as a landscape. Even his short-term use of TANTRIC imagery points to his roots in nature. He started off with watercolour landscapes, but his abstract works were mostly in oils, the nature of the medium contributing to impasto swirls and drips that characterize them.’
