Paintings of caravans, or "marches" were popular in mid- to late eighteenth century France, a notable example being Boucher's Return from Market from 1767.1 Though the present example exhibits a distinctly fluid and confident hand, scholars remain divided on the attribution. Jean-Baptiste Deshays (1729-1765) has been suggested, as has the Boucher pupil Pierre Lelu (1741-1810).
