Not many works by David Teniers the Elder have come down to us, but he painted landscapes, religious and mythological scenes. He trained his much more successful son, David Teniers the Younger, with whom he collaborated after 1626. Teniers the Elder was active in Rome where he befriended Adam Elsheimer, whose work influenced Teniers, particularly in the composition of his landscapes.1 Teniers executed an upright Christ on the Road to Calvary, sold New York, Sotheby's, 04 June 2015, lot 61 featuring a more compressed compositional design, albeit with a similar overall structure and figural technique to the present work.
When last sold (see Provenance), Hans Vlieghe endorsed the attribution to Teniers the Elder, on the basis of photographs.
