Antonio Balestra trained in Venice under Antonio Belluci (1654 - 1726 ) before moving to Bologna and then to Rome to work in Carlo Marratta's (1625 - 1713 ) workshop. The Adoration of the Shepherds set as a nocturne was a favorite theme of his, inspired by Correggio's example with a pitch-black background and the Christ Child emanating otherworldly light.
