One of the great French Orientalist painters of the nineteenth century, Eugène Fromentin was trained as a landscapist in Rémond's studio and under Louis Cabat before he began traveling to North Africa. He was one of the earliest artists to interpret life in Algeria, where he returned numerous times.

The present plein-air landscape was painted in Donzère in the southeast of France, on the left bank of the Rhône.
