J. Davies, "Van Dyck's Apostles: introduction, overview, and findings," in Jordaens Van Dyck Journal, no. 3 (April 2022), pp. 87, 89, note 39, reproduced p. 84, fig. 18, and in color p. 86, fig. 23 (as Studio[?] of Van Dyck).

The present composition follows one that Van Dyck explored several times as part of a bust-length apostle series on panel, the originals of which (the so-called Böhler Series) were painted c. 1618-20 and are spread out among European museums and private collectors.1 This painting, originally on panel, by a follower of Van Dyck is a faithful copy of the autograph version of St. Phillip sold by Sotheby's London, 29 July 2020, lot 117.2 Both the present painting and the one sold last year are also closely connected to an autograph version now in a private collection in Munich.3
