Description
Property from the Estate of Dr. Charles and Anita Winter
Follower of Sir Anthony van Dyck
St. Philip holding a cross, bust-length
oil on panel, transferred to canvas
panel: 26 by 19¾ in.; 66 by 50.2 cm.
framed: 35 by 29 in.; 88.9 by 73.7 cm.
With Galerie Sedelmeyer (according to a wax seal on the reverse);
With M. Knoedler and Co., New York, no. 10770, as Rubens (according to a label on the reverse).
The present composition follows one that Van Dyck explored several times as part of a bust-length apostle series on panel, the originals of which (the so-called Böhler Series) were painted c. 1618-20 and are spread out among European museums and private collectors.1 This painting, originally on panel, by a follower of Van Dyck is a faithful copy of the autograph version of St. Phillip sold by Sotheby's London, 29 July 2020, lot 117.2 Both the present painting and the one sold last year are also closely connected to an autograph version now in a private collection in Munich.3
