St. Paul writing at his desk

oil on canvas, unframed

canvas: 37 by 50 in.; 94 by 127 cm.

Private collection, Belgium.

Vignon traveled to Rome as a young artist and came under the influence of Caravaggio. He painted a series of seated apostles during this time, and the present lot relates to autograph depictions of St. Paul, one version of which is in the Harvard Art Museums.1 The hands and still life of books in the present canvas resemble these early paintings. The 1627 inventory of Cardinal Francesco Maria Del Monte, an important patron of Caravaggio, mentions a St. Paul by Vignon.

We are grateful to Paola Bassani Pacht for her assistance in the cataloging of this lot.
