This work is based on the portrait of Uguccione by dell'Altissimo in the Galleria degli Uffizi, Florence (inv. no. Ic447). Uguccione (c. 1250-1319) was a prominent army captain and later served as the chief magistrate of Pisa. The painting of him in the Uffizi was one of a series of portraits of illustrious men that was commissioned by Cosimo I de' Medici, after the renowned collection belonging to Paolo Giovio.
