Archimedes drawing a geometric shape

oil on canvas

canvas: 24½ by 19 in.; 62 by 48.3cm.

framed: 28¼ by 22 in.; 71.8 by 55.9cm.

This anonymous artist was inspired by the strong tenebrism of Caravaggio’s works made in the first decade of the seventeenth century in Rome, such as the half-length figures in the artist's depictions of the Supper at Emmaus, now in the collections of the National Gallery, London (inv. no. NG172) and the Brera, Milan (inv. no. 2296).
