Andromeda rescued by Perseus

oil on canvas, unframed

canvas: 27½ by 21⅝ in.; 69.8 by 54.9 cm.

In Greek mythology, Andromeda, daughter of Cassiopeia and Cepheus, king and queen of Ethiopia, was punished for her mother's vanity by Poseidon and was chained to a rock to await being devoured by a sea monster. After his victory over Medusa, Perseus flew by the enslaved Andromeda, fell in love, and rescued her from this unfair fate. This scene depicts the moment when Perseus is about to slay the sea monster.
