Two aizuri-e woodblock prints

Edo period, 19th century


Each a woodblock print, aizuri-e, and comprising:

- The courtesan Hanaogi of the Ogiya house (Ogiya uchi Hanaogi), from the series Beauties from the Yoshiwara (Yoshiwara bijin), signed Keisai Eisen, censor's seal kiwame, published by Tsutaya Kichizo (Koiedo), circa 1830

- The Spirit of a Courtesan's Heart (Iki joro), from the series Pictures of Modern Figures (Tosei sugata no utsushi-e), signed Keisai Eisen ga, censor's seal kiwame, published by Kawaguchiya Chozo, circa 1835

Eavh vertical oban:

The first: 37 x 25.6 cm.

The second: 36 x 25.6 cm.

The first depicts Hanaogi of the Ogiya beside various tea utensils, the second a courtesan rolling a letter, a lacquer writing box (suzuribako) by her feet.
