A Wood Carving Figure of Vishnu

South India, Kerala, 17th Century


Height 20½ in. (52.1 cm)


Vishnu standing in slight tribhanga, wearing a tall kirtimukuta and foliate crown, wearing circular earrings, a beaded collar and long string of beads, wearing the sacred thread, the upavita across his chest, a jeweled girdle with a rosette clasp, short dhoti with hanging garlands, the primary right hand in abhaya mudra, the left holding the bud of a lotus, the secondary left holding a bird, flanked by Vishnu's two consorts, encased in a floral and foliate aureole 

Collection of Ben Birillo Sr., since mid/late 1970s, and thence by descent.
