The Rolex Day-Date was presented in Basel in 1956. The Day-Date has always been an automatic, water-resistant wristwatch and indicates the hours and the minutes, the day of the week and the date. Its design is timeless and has survived all of the fashion trends since then and is still in production today.
The Day-Date can be found with stella dials, hardstone dials, precious dials, Khanjar dials, standard dials and even wood and fossil dials. The present watch is one of two examples that was made to custom specifications by the original owner. When it was first seen on the market in 2017, the watch caused quite a stir amongst collectors, scholars and the market.
The present watch was first sold at auction by the family of the original owner in 2017. The original owner requested to have a Day-Date with the look and feel of a Submariner or SeaDweller. This Day-Date completely crafted of white gold is a results of that customization. Delivered to the original owner in 1969, the watch has been serviced by Rolex on four different occasions from the 1970s to 1990s and on the 30th of March 2017, was completely overhauled by Rolex in Geneva.
This Day-Date, a reference 1803, should be fitted with a fluted bezel. The dial has been made in the Submariner-style with a black matte finish and luminous dots and baton numerals. The signature is painted in white and the luminous Mercedes hands are usually found on sports model and never on a Day-Date.
