Hugh Moss mentions that from the Han dynasty onwards, the ceramic industry provided vast quantities of small wares, including censers, flower vases, weights and small water vessels such as the present piece, made specifically for the literati audience, see Hugh Moss, Arts from the Scholar's Studio, University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong, 1986, p. 222, no. 207. Compare with another water dropper of the same realistically modelled form, sold Sotheby's London, 26th April 1955, lot 92.
