A large yellow-ground famille-rose bowl

Seal mark and period of Daoguang

清道光 黃地粉彩纏枝花卉紋盌 《大清道光年製》款

well painted to the exterior with a composite floral scroll bearing various large peony, chrysanthemum, lotus and hibiscus flowers in vivid enamels, all against a bright yellow ground, the interior enamelled in iron-red with five bats in flight, the base centred with a six-character seal mark in underglaze blue

Diameter 18.4 cm, 7¼ in.

Based on earlier enamelled models first made during the Kangxi period, several bowls of this combination and size bearing a Daoguang mark are known, compare, for instance, a bowl of this type in the Baur Collection, Geneva, illustrated in John Ayers, Chinese Ceramics in The Baur Collection, vol. 1, Geneva, 1999, cat. no. 338. Another example is published in Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing from the Kwan Collection, Hong Kong, 1983, cat. no. 42.
