A pale celadon jade-inset 'hongmu' ‘eight auspicious emblems’ ruyi scepter

Qing dynasty, 19th century

清十九世紀 紅木嵌青白玉雕八吉祥壽字紋三鑲如意


the arched wood shaft inlaid with three jade plaques, the plaque at the head carved in low relief with a central shou character surrounded by the beribboned san (parasol), yu (fish), hua (lotus), and guan (vase), the middle plaque with the gai (victory banner), chang (endless knot), and luo (conch), the third plaque carved with the lun (wheel), the stone flecked with opaque milky white inclusions


Length 21¼ in., 54 cm

Collection of Mrs. Walter N. Rothschild (1896-1987).

Gifted to the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, in 1963 (acc. no. 63.6.72).
