Lower Eocene
Green River Formation, Wyoming, USA
A fine example, and a wonderful representation of Eocene life (50 million years ago), measuring 55 ¼ x 80 ½ x 2 ½ inches (140.7 x 204.8 x 6.4 cm)
An uncommonly large fossil plate from the ancient lake system of the Green River Formation in Wyoming. Other than size, this dramatic plaque displays a large quantity of specimens, eleven in all, and includes the five most desirable species. Another notable aspect is the superb state of preservation and the exquisite detail of each specimen that has been brought to life by the skill of the preparator.
The Green River Formation, in Utah and Wyoming, is one of the most important fossil sites for understanding the Eocene epoch that began about 55 million years ago. The fossils found at this site indicate that the climate of Wyoming was once moist temperate or sub-tropical.
