A four-colour gold and enamel snuff box

Hanau, circa 1820/25


of rounded rectangular form, the lid inset with a contemporary enamel plaque painted in opaque and translucent enamels over sunray engine-turning with a view of Schloss Pillnitz across the Elbe, after an engraving, within richly-chased coloured gold garland borders, the sides and base engine-turned with foliate borders, traces of marks only, left rim with engraved numeral: 2801, in original tooled morocco leather case

9.2cm., 3 5/8 in. wide 

According to tradition, a gift from Karl XIV Johan (1763-1844) to Carl Peter af Klintberg (1767-1826), Stockholm, in 1824
