San Sebastiano Curone 1758 - 1823 Rome

A Sacrificial Procession

Pen and brown ink and brown and gray washes;

203 by 280 mm; 8 by 11 in

Bears unidentified collector's mark, verso, not in Lugt;
Private Collection, UK;
with Spencer Samuels, New York,
where acquired, 1991

This signed and finely preserved sheet by the Italian Neoclassicist, Felice Giani, can be closely compared on both stylistic and compositional grounds with a similarly sized drawing that appeared on the London art market in 2011.1  Though that drawing is extremely discolored, due in part to a varnish that has been applied to the verso, it does bear an intriguing inscription to the lower right corner - Processione del tempio della Pace - alluding to a possible decorative scheme, to which the O'Brien drawing can also be associated.
