Description

Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849)

Surugadai in Edo (Toto Surugadai)

Edo period, 19th century

woodblock print, from the series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (Fugaku sanjurokkei), signed Hokusai aratame Iitsu hitsu, published by Nishimuraya Yohachi (Eijudo), circa 1831-32, blue outline

Horizontal oban: 25.3 x 37.3 cm., 10 x 14⅝ in.

The quiet road in the Surugadai district of Edo is here populated with travellers and labourers each carrying their load, a large pine tree looms over the descending hill among verdant foliage and rooftops. Two dwellings appear to the right of the scene, along with a snow-capped Mount Fuji in the distant west, looming over further rooftops to the distance.
