The phrases accompanying the figures roughly translate to:
The King - wants to have his tribute; "I reign over you all"
The Lady - wants to have good things; "I seduce you all"
The Priest - wants to have his offering; "I pray for you all"
The Jew - does bad business; "I betray you all"
The Begger - says "I have nothing; I bother you all"
The Soldier - says "I give nothing; I guard you all"
The Farmer - says "Let God's will happen; I nourish you all"
The Devil - says "Beware you all, I will get you all"
The figure of the beggar is derived from the engraving of "Le Mendiant à la jambe de bois," by Jacques Callot (Lieure 493).
Another beaker by this maker, of the same date and also engraved by Theodosius I Gobel (m. 1699, d. 1752), is cited Seling, p. 319, where it is described as engraved with inscriptions from the Augsburg Rathaus (Town Hall).
