A Pair of Meissen Imari Scalloped Plates, Circa 1740


after a Japanese original, vibrantly painted in a characteristic palette, the center with a scalloped panel of a bird perched on the rocky bank of a turbulent river painted in pale puce-lustre beneath a pine tree and trailing chrysanthemum issuing from the opposite bank, the elaborate brocaded rim reserved with two underglaze-blue-edged panels, each with an iron-red and gilt phoenix, the reverse with three large Imari sprigs, and concentric circles in underglaze-blue, crossed swords marks and painter's mark K in underglaze-blue, impressed numeral 22
