Robert & Manuel Schmit, Stanislas Lépine 1835-1892, Catalogue raisonné de l'oeuvre peint, Paris, 1993, p. 28, no. 63, catalogued & illustrated
The present work was painted circa 1876-77 and depicts Pont Marie, a bridge which crosses the Seine and links the Île Saint-Louis to the quai de l'Hôtel de Ville. The bridge was first proposed in 1605 and finally approved nine years later by King Louis XIII, making it the oldest in Paris. The roof line of the Hôpital Hôtel-Dieu is visible in the distance. Lépine was greatly inspired by the River Seine and especially the bridges, as well as the old streets of Paris and Montmartre.
