Ottin is most well known as a sculptor, one of his most famous pieces Polyphemus Surprising Acis and Galatea, is a centerpiece for the Medici Fountain in the Jardin du Luxembourg. His paintings rarely appear at auction, the present work a large, peaceful depiction of a sunny day in Paris, Pont Neuf in the distance. Ottin also sketched the city in watercolour, a collection of eighteen works are now in the Bibliothèque Nationale de France capturing various viewpoints, for example a staircase on Rue du Mont-Cenis, the Grandes-Carrières district and street views of Montmartre.
