Born in Marseilles in 1961, Antoine d’Agata grew up bombarded with violence, drugs, and prostitution, leading to his uncensored documentation of taboo subjects and the darkest side of humanity. In 1983, he left France and started his nomadic life. He later found himself in New York in 1990, in which he studied photography under the tutelage of Nan Goldin and Larry Clark.
Through immersing himself into the madness of the world and building an intimate relationship with the characters, he is able to capture their personalities authentically, blatantly revealing the sordidness of life and directly embracing our darkest emotions, fear, rage, and desire. D’Agata uses photography as a way to experience from within, rather than recording the moment as an outsider. The present photograph captures a nude female kneeling down on the floor facing down, struggling. The use of a red filter and blurry effect amplifies the pain that she is going through, eliciting an unsettling feeling within the viewers, making them impossible to ignore.
