A steel helmet (kulah khud) with horns, Persia, Qajar, 19th century


the domed skull bearing an embossed demon mask over the brow and a pair of metal horns partially decorated with silver koftgari, the skull further decorated with a series of cartouches comprising figures and calligraphy against a dense foliate ground populated with animals and birds, with a sliding nasal guard, plume holders, spike and a metal chain mail neck guard

This striking helmet is part of the kulah khud group of Iranian helmets and is distinctively designed with a head of a Persian horned demon or div. Other known Persian examples have been dated to the late eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. A nineteenth century Qajar helmet with steel horns is in the David Collection, Copenhagen, inv.no.30/1977; Kjeld von Folsach et al, Fighting, Hunting, Impressing, Copenhagen, 2021, cat.no.66, pp.172.
