The tradition for carving hardstones in the Indian subcontinent predates the Mughal period. The interest in jade in the Mughal Empire probably emerged from their Timurid ancestors and possibly also from European lapidaries working at the royal Mughal workshops. The use of jade at the Mughal court reached its peak in the seventeenth century during the reign of the Emperor Jahangir and his son, Shah Jahan. Jade objects were often inlaid with gold and set with precious stones as seen in the present cup.
