rectangular, the sides fitted with hardstone panels, raised on stepped supports, the hinged cover depicting three indigenous artists looking at a textile dragon, wood lined, stamped 'Sterling, Mexico Los Castillo Taxco' and with eagle assay mark

31.5cm., 12 1/2in. wide

The founders of the Castillo firm, the brothers Antonio, Jorge, Miguel and Justo trained at the workshop in Taxco of the American William Spratling who helped to revive Mexico's silver manufactories in the 1930s. They created their own company Los Castillo in 1939.
