Marjan Abedian was born 1976 in Tehran, Iran. She studied with Master Fakhreddin Mokhberi at Mahdis painting studio, and then graduated with a bachelor’s degree in painting from Pars University. Marjan Abedian has been teaching painting for the last twelve years. She has participated in numerous exhibitions including showings at the Reza Abbasi Museum, Iran, the Niavaran Cultural Center, Iran, the Milad Tower, Iran, the Sa’dabad Historical Complex, Iran, Domination at Artem Galleries, USA, and the Linda Farrell gallery, France, among others. This painting of “Daapir”, in Kurdish meaning grandmother, won Second Place Portraiture in the 15th International ARC Salon Competition. This Rembrandtesque painting, with darker tones in the background and in the garments, draws the viewer’s focus, especially, to the hands and face of the sitter. She is alert with an intelligence and knowingness in her eyes, as she looks upwards into the light. A sensitive and emotional pathos carries through to the viewer as she seems to gaze through the veil between life and death to a beautiful world unknown. Her slightly enlarged and worn hands have a relaxed tension about them; hands that have been well used throughout her long life.
