Robert Rauschenberg’s Snowflake Crime XXV is a classic example of the artist’s unique and celebrated style, executed on an intimate scale. The Snowflake Crime drawings, of which there are about thirty, were created with Rauschenberg’s preferred solvent transfer technique that allowed him to shift images from other sources – often mass media – onto paper. The transfer process was intended to mask the artist’s hand; characteristic of Rauschenberg’s style, these mechanically reproduced images were combined with handmade gestures, blurring the boundary between appropriation and expression.
