Description
Arkansas
Constitution of the State of Arkansas, as Adopted by the Convention, February 11, 1868. Little Rock: Republican Steam Book and Job Printing Office, 1868
8vo (242 x 151 mm). Type in two columns; one or two stray stains. Stitched in self-wrappers; browning and smudging to wrapper, old horizontal fold, light creases. In a red quarter morocco slipcase, with folding chemise.
Containing the complete text of the 1868 Arkansas State Constitution, adopted following the end of the Civil War, and by which Arkansas rejoined the Union. The 1867 Reconstruction Acts required the Confederate states to recognize former slaves as citizens, and in 1868 a Constitutional Convention took place in Arkansas to draft a new state constitution in accordance with the Acts. The adoption of the new constitution made Arkansas the first Confederate state to rejoin the Union under the Reconstruction Acts. The document was replaced by a more conservative constitution in 1874, which reflected the resentment of the Reconstruction constitution by the state.
