Description
English Civil War--House of Commons
Warrant signed by five Members of Parliament,
ordering the payment of £84 to Nathaniel Stephens, MP for Gloucestershire, "for his subsistence, for one & twentie weekes", signed by Henry Mildmay, Francis Rous, Thomas Hoyle, Cornelius Holland, and Denis Bond, 1 page, folio, integral address leaf, Westminster, 8 April 1647
A DOCUMENT SIGNED BY RADICAL PARLIAMENTARIANS. All of these men supported the trial of the King, although none actually signed the death warrant, and most served in Parliament and government during the Commonwealth. Henry Mildmay, who was to be responsible for the sale of the crown jewels, died in exile after the Restoration, as did Cornelius Holland. Thomas Hoyle hanged himself on the first anniversary of the regicide. Nathaniel Stephens avoided legal retribution but it was claimed that when he died in 1660 the headless ghost of Charles I appeared at Chavenage House to drive his corpse to its grave.
