John Ruskin—John Everett Millais
Two autograph letters signed by Millais, and related items:
i) to John Ruskin, about coming to stay with him, commenting on his not knowing how to employ himself since his pictures have gone to the Royal Academy, and sending kind greetings to Mrs Ruskin ("…I have had my pictures catalogued most beautifully and when I get another couple you shall be the first to have them. Next week I hope to design the frame for Mrs Ruskin; which must be for the Departing Visitor the next thing I intend painting…"), 4 pages, 1864
ii) to Mrs Ford, declining a visit because of poor health, 7 March 1864
iii) Effie Millais, autograph letter signed, to Mrs Ford, describing a journey to Perth and the calamity of a house fire (“at 3 AM the Maid rushed into out room saying the house was on fire… of that fine house nothing remained but the Walls & Campanila, Sir E saved his Pictures The servants lost everything…”),
iv) an envelope with four sketches of animals by the young John Millais, 1878
13 pages in all, 8vo, laid down on two sheets from an album, with an envelope, photographs of Ruskin and Millais, and press cuttings
Sir John Everett Millais married Ruskin’s ex-wife, Effie Gray, in 1855.
