Description
Sir Winston Churchill--J.M. Keynes, and others
Three works about Churchill:
i) "Captain X" [Captain Alex Dewer Gibb.] With Winston Churchill at the Front. London: Gowans and Gray, 1924. FIRST EDITION, 8vo (162 x 90mm.), photographic portrait frontispiece, rebound in dark red cloth with gilt title to spine, vertical creases to prelims, extremities bumped;
ii) John Maynard Keynes. The Economic Consequence of Mr. Churchill. London: Hogarth Press, 1925. FIRST EDITION, 8vo (212 x 139mm.), lacking original green wrappers, upper corners of some leaves slightly creased, outer leaves slightly discoloured with some wear at extremities;
iii) [Winston Churchill.] My Ally. 1940? ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDITION, ONLY PRINTING, 8vo (220 x 153mm.), contains numerous reproductions of political cartoons, original cream card wrappers with "15 Nov. 1943" ink-stamped to upper cover, wrappers slightly soiled and rubbed at extremities, "CHURCHILL" inscribed in ink on spine
My Ally is a fascinating piece of wartime propaganda, perhaps compiled by the pamphleteer Wilhelm Liljencrantz, which 'attempts to ridicule Churchill's relationship with Stalin by contrasting his wartime alliance with his long history of anti-Communist statements' (Cohen).
