Description

1) Arabic manuscript on paper, 228 leaves plus 5 flyl-eaves, 9 lines to the page in naskh in black ink against a gold ground, with Persian interlinear translation in fine shikasteh in red ink, headings in gold thuluth, ruled in gold and blue, marginal notes in black and red ink, opening double page illuminated in gold and polychrome, in later Qajar floral lacquer binding, signed ‘ya sahib al-zaman’ in gold on the front board and dated 1214 AH (1799 AD) on the back board, leather spine

2) Persian manuscript on paper, 271 leaves plus 8 fly-leaves, 26 lines to the page, written in neat nasta’liq script in black ink, arranged in four columns separated by double intercolumnar rules in gold and black, headings in red and black, text within gold, black and blue rules, catchwords, occasional marginal notes, outer margins ruled in black, the opening page of each section with an illuminated headpiece (unwan), in lacquer binding depicting seated holy men with minute inscriptions in red nasta’liq inscriptions near each figure, leather spine

The first manuscript is a fine copy of Al-Sahifah Al-Sajjadiyyah (a collection of prayers), attributed to the fourth Shi’i Imam, ‘Ali ibn al-Husayn al-Sajjad Zayn al-‘Abidin. It is by a previously unrecorded scribe, Muhammad Shafi’, son of Muhammad Rafi’. A marginal note on folio 2b, written by Husayn Ashtiyani Qavam-e Daftar, mentions that the manuscript was given to him by Mu’tamid al-Sultan Aqa Reza Khan. The former gifted it to ‘Al Asghar Bayg. The note is dated 1312 AH (1894-95 AD).


The binding is signed ‘ya sahib al zaman’ which was another name for Muhammad Zaman III (active 1758-95), a Persian artist known for his paintings on lacquer, who worked for Lutf ‘Ali Khan Zand and subsequently for the Qajar ruling dynasty.
