Ex-collection Edgar Vincent, 1st Viscount d’Abernon (1857-1941) and his wife, Lady d'Abernon, thence by descent.
Ottoman designers often re-used similar overall patterns which were then slightly altered, either in design or colour or through another stylistic change. This also allowed manufacturers to use the same pattern for different functions, such as a cushion cover or for a divan (see Ipek: The Crescent & the Rose, Imperial Ottoman silks and velvets, ed. N. Atasoy, W.B. Denny, L.W. Mackie, H. Tezcan, 2001, p.212). For examples of this design on two looms of varying colours, notably red and cream like the present model and green and cream, see ibid, pp.214-5, figs.102 and 103.
