goauche heightened with gold on paper, black and white rules, narrow blue border, the image of Vishnu inscribed on the reverse in black devanagari script ''shri lacchman ji'', the image of Krishna numbered on the reverse in Hindi numerals ''67''


27.3 by 18.7cm; 27.2 by 19.4cm.

Two late eighteenth century works on paper from Andhra Pradesh, painted in a similar format and of comparable size, one depicting Krishna stealing curds and another depicting the Krishna vanquishing the crane-demon Bakasura, are in the collection of the Cleveland Museum of Art (acc. nos.1966.28 & 1966.20). A mid-eighteenth century illustration of an avatar of Vishnu blessing a king, probably painted at Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh, formerly in the collection of Paul F. Walter, sold at Christie's New York, online auction, 21-28 September 2017, lot 642. Two further comparable paintings on cloth depicting Hindu deities, attributed to the religious centre of Tirupati in South India, dating from the early eighteenth century, sold at Christie's London, 12 June 2014, lots 157-8.
