Description

Wagenaar, Jan

['tVerheugd Amsterdam, ter gelegenheid van het plegtig bezoek hunner doorlugtige... hoogheden, Willem, prinse van Oranje... en... Fredrica Sophia Wilhelmina, prinsesse van Pruissen... Amsterdam: Yntema and Tieboel (Johannes Smit), 1768] (actually 1772)

folio (415 x 267mm.), comprising: printed explanation of the engraved title-page, engraved title-page dated 1772, one leaf of subscribers (of 3), 14 double-page engraved plates, ALL WITH CONTEMPORARY HAND-COLOUR, contemporary red calf-backed boards, binding slightly rubbed; sold as a collection of plates not subject to return

A fine and complete collection of plates by Simon Fokke and Reinier Vinkeles, commemorating the entrance into Amsterdam of William of Orange and his new wife, Frederica Sophia Wilhelmina of Prussia. The plates depict processions through the town, a banquet, a ball, a play, meetings and a regatta.

The first issue of this work in 1768 additionally contained 72pp. of letterpress text by the historian Jan Wagenaar; subsequently the stock of plates was purchased by the printmaker Johannes Smit, who added the engraved title-page (dated 1772 and with his imprint) and the accompanying letterpress explanation. Most of the copies listed in STCN are described as defective for varying reasons, probably because copies of the work were issued with differing contents.
