An Egyptian Basalt or Graywacke Jar
Predynastic Period (Naqada II)/1st Dynasty, circa 3500-2900 B.C.
of ovoid form with offset foot, tubular handles, and everted rim.
Height 12.7 cm.
There is an old number in black ink under the foot, “2808" or "28UB?”
For the form compare W. M. F. Petrie and J. E. Quibell, Naqada and Ballas. 1895, London, 1896, pl. VIII, 28; also see Sotheby’s, New York, June 3rd, 2015, no. 2, for a smaller but otherwise very similar jar (described as graywacke).
