A Roman Marble Marine Sarcophagus Relief Panel
Antonine Period, circa late 2nd Century A.D.
from the front of a sarcophagus, carved in high relief with two confronted sea-centaurs in the center flanked by two nereids each riding a sea-horse, and at each end of the panel with a nereid grasping a sea-monster swimming away from a sea-centaur, multiple erotes cavorting among the figures.
46.5 by 209.5 cm.
Two marine sarcophagi, each with central portrait medallion, were sold at Sotheby's New York in recent years: December 10th, 2009, no. 75 (Hever Castle), and December 15th, 2016, no. 62 (Giustiniani).
