Painted around 1895, On the Banks of a River was conceived during Thaulow's sojourn in Dieppe from 1894 to 1898. His river paintings from this period were generally of the Arques River or of smaller rivers around the area. A possibility still exists that the subject could be from the Montreuil-sur-Mer period, dating from 1892 to 1894.

Another very similar composition was used as an illustration in the article in The Studio, London, written by Gabriel Mourey, in June 1897, p. 8 in Vol 11, titled Les Saules.
