The present bronze was cast after a model conceived by the French artist Théodore Gericault circa 1820-1822. The depiction of a flayed horse illustrates the painter and sculptor's deep anatomical knowledge and his fascination with horses, which is also evidenced by the large number of paintings, drawings, and sculptures of the animals that he produced throughout his career.
