The self-taught German sculptor Eduard Müller settled in Rome in 1857. The present model was conceived in 1870, undoubtedly inspired by the Roman antiquities which surrounded him. This impressive, near life-size bronze version was cast by the prominent Roman foundry of Alessandro Nelli.
