Description
Animalier Bronzes from an Important Private Collection
Isidore-Jules Bonheur
French
1827 - 1901
Cheval Henissant (A Horse Calling)
signed: I. BONHEUR and stamped: PEYROL
bronze, dark brown patina, on a veined green marble base and a modern metal pedestal
bronze: 69 by 82cm., 27 by 32in.
base: 3 by 67cm., 1¼ by 6½in.
pedestal: 82.5 by 69cm., 32½ by 27in.
This finely observed bronze of a calling horse is typical of the high quality of Bonheur's modelling, with its pricked ears, flaring nostrils and tensed muscles and sinews to its face and neck. Thus in spite of his feet being planted firmly on the ground, the moment is fully animated. Bonheur exhibited at least five single horses at the Salon between 1848 and 1899.
